The editorial content of my mind

This blog is sometimes about avocado. I love it in slices on salad and as guacamole. Mmmm. Green gold. Also, sometimes I broach the craziness that is life in washington dc.

Avocado miscellanea--a veritable smorgasbord!

...Highlights from the first 6 google-returned pages for avocado.

Self explanatory: The Avocado of the Month Club...

Since 1915, the California Avocado Society appears to be only such society on planet.

Here's an Avocado Milkshake Recipe. Mmmm.

Here's a veg restaurant in Baltimore called the Flying Avocado!

I also came across “What's in a Name? The Avocado Story” (2006) a NPR peice by Howard Yoon.

According to this "research," in 1915, CA avocado farmers apparently created its current English name from its original Spanish name – ahuacate. And, here’s a treat for you!! – They wanted to change the name in part because “it was the Aztec word for testicle, named for its shape and reputation as an aphrodisiac.” “There are more than 400 varieties of avocado, but Hass has become the most popular in the United States.” Because it’s easiest to grow, tasty, and has a high oil content relative to other avocado types.

From article: “Grilled corn kernels, diced red onions and mango [and red pepper, jalapeño, cilantro, oil] elbow each other for attention until chunks of avocado mediate and mellow the mix into a tasty salsa— an unstable structure turned stable. An ordinary salad of greens, tomatoes and raw veggies turns almost decadent with slices of avocado.” So true! And it’s the highest in protein of all the fruits.

And...Avocado Festivals!

Carpinteria, CA, Avofest, Since 1986 in early October, CA’s “largest free festival.” Not to mention a festival devoted to this beautiful green gem.

Fallbrook, CA, also has an Avo Fest. Since 1962 it's been “in April to coincide with peak production from the local groves.”

Books!

The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two: The Hidden Lives and Strange Origins of Common and Not-So-Common Words (Oct, 2007). It basically only deals with the avocado in the title.

The Dud Avocado (1958) – the author is purported to be a mix of Bridget Jones, Carrie Bradshaw, & Holden Caulfield. Sounds good! May have to read that one! It's amazing to think about all of the books that have been written and largely forgotten, such as this one.

Movies!

Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (1989) – need anything else be typed? :)
